Morgan announces partnership with start up Salurate Ltd .

The UK has an unacceptable annual record relating to issues in pregnancies, with over 4000 still births and a mortality rate for mothers at 8.2/1000 live births, indicating an urgent need for early identification of those pregnancies that may be at risk, to allow preventative measures to be taken. For example, pre-ecampsia (PE) is a syndrome that is a major cause of morbidity and mortality of both mothers and babies. Current indicators have limited reliability, an apparently-well woman throughout pregnancy may suddenly develop PE symptoms close to term, with potentially catastrophic consequences

Salurate has devised a test which is simple, non invasive and inexpensive and which appears, after several pilot studies, to be much more accurate than traditional PE indicators and in particular appears to have greater efficacy in predicting gestational problems from week 20 onwards than other tests.

Morgan is now working with Salurate to develop the test device and both companies are working together to undertake extended studies at a number of Birth Centres to confirm the test’s efficacy.

For more information please do not hesitate to contact us.

Working closely with Southampton University Morgan IAT has just successfully completed Phase 1 of a competition with NHS SouthEast under the SBRI Scheme looking at the feasibility of a rehabilitation tool for stroke patients with upper limb disability.

Normal arm and hand function involves reaching for and grasping objects, and then releasing them at the right time and place. People with stroke find this difficult or impossible to do. The device proposed in this report provides the opportunity for patients to practice reaching, grasping and releasing in order to promote brain recovery in a manner that is motivational and progressive.

The ultimate objective is to design and develop a commercial, low cost stroke rehabilitation system, which provides engaging and effective rehabilitation of arm and hand function for stroke patients to use in their own homes and on their own. The system will accelerate motor learning with augmented visual, auditory and tactile feedback using Haptic Devices, (devices which can provide the patient with actual sensation) and Virtual Environments.

The concept is a device comprised of thimbles worn on the fingertips, position sensors along the backs of the fingers and thumb all linked to a band around the wrist. This is wirelessly connected to a computer to allow the user to see their own arm and hand interact with virtual objects on the screen (for example a cup, ball, egg etc) in real-time, while they also receive physical sensation on their fingertips. Through these, the user will aim to complete interactive exercises which adapt to their ability and engage and motivate them in their rehabilitation.

A proof of concept demonstrator has been built and Morgan is now bidding for the second phase of the competition to take the project forward.

Morgan Innovation and Technology makes medical pain relief equipment – lesion generators – for an American firm, which are shipped around the world for use in hospitals, as well as other medical industry related products.

Co-owner and managing director Sue Clarke said: “it was started by my husband Howard and I in 1987.

He’s a designer, an inventor, so we needed a company to exploit the ideas we had.

Now we have about 60% of the world market.”

It is for exports that the company won the Queen’s Award for Entetrprise in the International Trade category.

During the past three years Morgan has increased its overseas earnings by 84% and its exports now account for 85% of its annual sales.

It is also developing new ideas, in areas like stroke treatment and sleep apnoea.

In recognition of its contribution to international sales in the UK.

During the past three years Morgan has increased its overseas earnings by 84 per cent and its exports now account for 85 per cent of its annual sales.

The company’s principal product line is a range of radio frequency lesion generators for bringing pain relief to hospital patients – especially those with acute back problems which it designs and manufactures for Neurotherm Inc. The Company’s strategic partnership with Neurotherm is an important element of its success.

Managing Director Sue Clarke believes the company is also gaining a vital competitive edge by developing and manufacturing a host of new ideas, in fields as diverse as motor neurone disease, stroke treatment and sleep apnoea.

“Working closely with users of specialised equipment in hospitals and clinics we are geared up to identify and develop innovative new ideas for treatment, which might otherwise have gone by the board, because the potential volumes are not sufficiently attractive for large manufacturers,” she says.

A key source of many of the innovative ideas that Morgan develop and put into production is via excellent contacts in the UK research community, particularly universities and hospitals. This is leading to revolutionary new machines for the specialised medical treatments that the company is now working on and, which will become available over the next few years.

Morgan owes a lot of credit for its break-through technologies to Technical Director Howard Clarke, who with wife Sue established the company back in 1987 to develop his pain relief ideas. In growing the company to its present position they have been aided by the financial expertise of fellow director Andrew Rowland.

The Company employs 24 people and, to accommodate its expanding business, moved from Liss to its present new hi-tech premises on Petersfield Business Park in January this year.
